Help please :P
Can anyone link me to when they did the meme where you talk about all your basic info in case anyone ever missed anything about you? I can't for the life of me find it on anyone's journal. :( Thanks in advance! :)

Also, I want to throw my cellphone against the wall right now. My memory card is corrupted or something and it just destroyed all the pictures I had on there. :( :( GOD DAMN IT. :( And now it keeps shutting down when I try to access any of them. It shows the files as there...but the files are corrupted. ARRGGHHHHHHHH

update
First off, thanks for all the comments and well-wishes. They really, really do help. I try not to be the person who lists every bad thing that happened every day, every week, etc., just because I don't want to get into the habit of that, and I try, try to keep things on a somewhat positive note even when I'm caught in a bit of a funk. But sometimes it feels so much better to say "These are the bad things that are weighing me down" and just, as Samwise Gamgee might say, let others "share the load", in a way.

So, I saw my grandmother this morning... )

And then I talked to my mom, about my dad... )

Anyway... I'm still treading the line of funkitude, but trying to keep things light. Garden is in good shape. The mint is growing like crazy, so I've got a couple gallons of mint tea in the fridge. The season finale of Doctor Who is on this weekend, so that's good. Unless it sucks. Then that's bad.

Oh, some Doctor Who related thoughts... )

Also keeping me from the path of funkitude, my students got together and bought me a gift certificate for a massage and also a gift basket full of all sorts of lotions and soaps and hand creams from Shade Mountain Naturals, which I love to pieces because not only is it within about fifteen minutes of where I work, but I've known the owner for almost ten years, and really, if there's any requirement I have about getting a massage or a facial, it's that I'm dealing with someone I know and trust.

So now I love my students even more, and owe them big.

Also, the holiday weekend should see me writing again, since I haven't touched that since... well, whenever I finished chapter nine. So here's hoping chapter ten can be knocked out in one or two good sittings.

Xavin/Karolina and stuff
This was supposed to be about how Xavin/Karolina is a more realistic same-sex couple than can be found in most young adult fiction, but after a while I just started being like "XAVIN/KAROLINA IS T3H ROX0RS" so it's hard to tell what point I'm trying to make. I don't mean that the couple that sets the best example for GLBT teenagers should be kept together just to provide good role models, which I think I end up sounding like I'm saying. I don't mean that. I just love Xavin.

(oh, and I really don't like Nico, and you can tell. Just a warning.)

here goes nothing )

Things that are awesome.
A) There is a website, www.roadsideamerica.com, that catalogues various roadside attractions throughout the United States of America. Neil Gaiman would plotz.

B) They have a listing for ;The Biggest Ball of Twine in Minnesota. That's right, the biggest ball of twine in Minnesota.

Context is a Youtube vid.

Jesus, that's a long song.

    Worst TV Shows, And More...
Here is a list of the 25 Worst Sitcoms Ever. I never knew there was a Harry and the Hendersons series--I vaguely remember the movie. I’m probably the only person out there that ever watched Homeboys in Outer Space. I think I also watched Small Wonder, and I know I watched Family Matters for a long time. Can anyone think of any others that deserved to be on that list?

In other news, I finally found the intro for Beyond Reality, thanks to Youtube.

And this might be of interest to Youtube users. Apparently, a judge ordered Youtube to give up all user histories to Viacom, in order to identify copyright infringement. I’m glad I deleted those Tomorrow People episodes from my account a while back.

    The cursed hat.
So, I'm knitting a cursed hat.

JP wanted a hat. And we found a pattern (this one, in fact).

This hat, perhaps, embodies our lives. Weird, crazy shit happening and we (as JP puts it): "struggle through it". So it's the "struggle through it" hat.

My denise interchangeables, which have survived years now and taken a lot of abuse snapped. Not once, but twice. I had more dropped and messed up stitches than I usually do, but that's small change. Especially compared to what just happened:
I was on DPNS (since the denise cable is deadz0r) and finished up a needle... The empty needle then slipped out of my hand and fell at JUST the right angle to slip between the grates of the A/C vent on the floor next to my desk.

I'm not even sure of the astronomical odds of that. I've dropped crap before and it's never fallen at that very slim angle.

Very happy will I be when this hat is done... but I'm making a similar one (the hat from SnB:Nation that actually inspired the hat linked above) for myself after.

Critics Schmritics (unless I agree with them): Wanted vs. Hancock
Battle of the movies I only kinda wanted to see...

     vs.

Okay, so, here's the thing: Wanted and Hancock are both big summer movies. One of them is even Big Willie Style. But they're not the BIGGEST most YAY movies of the summer for me -- those would be Iron Man (lived up to my expectations and was a hoot), Indy (let me down... so, so down the more I think of it, though Harrison Ford was the bomb), and the upcoming The Dark Knight (gotta calm down about that one because my expectations are getting impossibly high) -- but, still, they're both big, blockbustery type movies that I knew I'd see on the big screen because I have a movie going addiction.

The weird thing is, though, that the completely forgettable Wanted is getting really good reviews while the funny and surprisingly heartfelt Hancock is getting panned all over the place. What's the deal? What'd I miss?

Now, I didn't HATE Wanted. It had some cool moments and some fun action, but... nah. No performances really stood out, and I felt like I'd seen it all before -- plus, I kinda wish it'd been based on the comic it was based on at least a little more. All the critical kudos it's getting don't add up to me.

And I didn't LOVE Hancock, but it was darn fun and had a cool story in there, though I suspect the original cut, supposedly trimmed to avoid an a R rating, has more flow and depth. The performances are all great, though -- especially Jason Bateman, who is like a more sincere version of Michael Bluth from Arrested Development and the Fresh Prince himself, who people seem to sometimes forget isn't just a "MEGASTAR" -- he's a really talented, extremely watchable actor. He gets to be a little different here and does a good job with it.

Still, critics schmritics (Jason Lee circa Mallrats style)... Wanted = Mostly blah. Hancock = Mostly yay.

    Well. Shit. (Fuck Viacom!)
Judge rules that YouTube must hand over all user information to Viacom

Apparently, Viacom wishes to prove that copywrite material is more popular than user-created.
Okay, fine. All they need are those specific view logs. This judge is going a step too far in not only demanding the logs of what specific users have watched, but also their IP addresses and all private videos.

I don't know what Viacom is planning here, but it's really fucking shady. Whenever YouTube received a complaint about something under copywrite, they took it down: if Viacom couldn't bother to keep track of that, it's their own fault. Google/YouTube did what they could. Nevermind that during the writer's strike, companies like Viacom said internet videos were just "promotional" as their excuse not to pay the writers.

This is BS. And I know it's going to hurt the YouTube userbase out of fear and that makes me sad, because Google was trying to protect the people and between Viacom and this judge... a lot of peoples' privacy is going to be invaded.

Strange Sherlock Holmes Related News, And More....
First, some strange news—Will Ferrell and Sacha Baron Cohen will be starring in an as yet untitled Sherlock Holmes comedy. Cohen will be Holmes, and Ferrell will be Watson. I don’t see that working, and I’m staying far away from that one, since I tend to avoid movies with those two in them.

The only Holmes comedy I’ve actually seen and loved was Without a Clue, which starred Michael Caine as Sherlock Holmes. Of course, I only saw it once on television many years ago, and haven’t been able to find it since then.

Edit: Wow, looks like I’ll be able to watch it again. Someone uploaded it to Youtube.

In other news, if I’m still doing good health-wise on the 18th, I’ll be going to see The Dark Knight. I just won’t be getting any popcorn, since that’s off the list of things I’m allowed while the ulcer heals.

I think it could be the potential soundtrack to the film, but I dunno. I think some of these songs have been in other fanmixes, but they're still appropriate.

    1) "Bug Eyes" - Dredg (imagine it playing at the end of vol. 1, issue 18)
    2) "Live Young, Die Fast" - Alkaline Trio
    3)"Make A Sound" - Autopilot Off
    4) "Free" - VAST
    5)"Oooh Child"
    6) "Teenagers" - My Chemical Romance
    7) "Nitro" - The Offspring
    8) "True Believers" - Bouncing Souls
    9) "Creep" - Radiohead
    10) "Are We the Waiting" - Green Day
    11) "Stay Young"- Oasis
    12) "Error Operator" -Taking Back Sunday

Bonus tracks (nobody really knows these bands, but I like them alot and think they'd work for Xavin and Karolina)

    "Cosmic Castaway" - Electrasy

    Canada Day
Yesterday was Canada Day, and the weather was obligingly great for once. Stan and I spent much of the day outside, doing yard chores and vegging in lounge chairs (the balcony makes fine shade). But I had this strange itchiness all over, and actually ended up causing a gigantic bruise on my leg from scratching. I know I bruise easily, but that's ridiculous. I can feel the bruise hurting just by walking! Maybe it has something to do with the weird numbness in my leg/butt that I've had for a few weeks now.

Of course, the highlight of Canada Day in Waterloo is always UW's fireworks, and we headed down to see them as we do every year. This was the first year attending them from our new house, which is in a different part of the city and required a completely different route. We used to walk from north of the campus, but it's a bit far from the new house (which is south of the campus), so we biked. We found a good spot on the ground near other people, and much amusement was had when the guy two feet behind us freaked out as a mouse ran across his bare leg. He swatted at it, and it landed on a woman nearby. I guess it ran off after that.

The fireworks were good as always, and then thousands of people began the mass exodus back to their homes. Some moron left that flexible orange fencing up in the fields where people always sit/walk, which provided a delightful accident hazard in the dark. Stan almost walked into it (and I'm sure plenty of people did), but I pulled him away just in time because I see quite well in the dark (thanks to my very light-sensitive eyes). I didn't like the new route home, because there were uncomfortably large numbers of people on bike and foot packed close together, and feared there would be an accident in the dark. No accidents that I saw, but it made me nervous.

Anyway, a good day! I miss our old walk home, though. It was always pleasant, and there were never too many people once we turned onto the 'secret' path.

Right... to stop my old man moaning...

Dunno whether any of you guys know but my dad's a comic artist - a pretty good one at that - even if I do say so myself. He's had quite a bit of stuff published over the years and brushed shoulders with some of the comic greats apparently. But - because of real life stuff it all fell away slightly and he distanced himself from the scene...

BUT. He's had numerous kicks up the arse and is getting going again.

He's had a few strips published recently that I said I'd pimp for him.

So... here is Straw Men - which he did all the art for.

He's also thrown himself into the world of blogging ( ¬_¬ nagging me all the way to help him) and he has himself a Blogspot where he's gonna be posting stuff like art and links to other stuff he's had done. He mainly does darker stuff, raging from horror to westerns with smatterings of sci-fi but but the stuff he does it great to be honest. Especially the stuff he writes himself (and a lot of it is better than the shit that is actually published and available to buy.)

So yea... if you could pass by occasionally - let him know I sent you so he knows I'm supporting him... It'd mean a great deal to me.

    Ta.

Peak Oil - The Story Behind Gas Prices

This article is in response to the "Let's All Boycott Exxon and Mobil Gas Station's" email which I receive fairly regularly.

I love when I get this email, because I get to again remind myself and others of how gas prices are set.

Let me clarify with this article, which I'll call "Peak Oil: The Story Behind Gas Prices".

#1 Not buying gas from an Exxon or Mobil station doesn't impact Exxon Corporation or Mobil Corporation, since they sell their gasoline to whichever distributor need it, no matter if it ends up at a BP or a Crystal Flash or Bob's Cheap Gas. The only person that boycotting a station hurts is the owner or franchisee of that particular station, their family, and probably their employees. They feed their family because of the Coke's and snacks we buy in their stores. They are lucky to make a dime on each gallon they sell.

#2 Long term gasoline prices are NOT set by oil companies. They are set at auction by bidding on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Gasoline is purchased months in advance using "futures contracts", which can be bought for next month, two months from now, or even years from now. The "futures contracts" for the current month, as it gets close to completion, are traded, just like stocks on the stock market. The contracts go up and down in price based on the demand for them. The final price for that "futures contract" determines the "spot price", which is the price that very moment, which in turn determines the price the distributor sets. The service station gets the word once a day from the distributor, usually around 4 p.m. afternoon, as to the price at which they should retail.

#3 At auction, the price has been bid up over the past five years because of increasing demand. There are more uses for oil products all around the world, and more users everyday. More cars in the US, China, Russia, India, etc. More products being made and shipped to us. The more demand, the higher the price.

#4 The reason gasoline prices weren't rising through the 80's and 90's was because oil supply or oil production increased at about the same annual rate as demand (about 1.5% per year).

#5 Oil production stopped increasing in 2004. Global daily production is has been basically fixed at 84.5 million barrels per day since then. While demand is rising, and yet supply is not, price will go up, because this is a bidding auction or a free market.

#6 If oil production continues at this 84.5 mbpd level, expect gas prices to double every four years. That means that gasoline would be 10 USD per gallon within 7 years. Oil prices would be to 1,000 USD per barrel within 10 years.

#7 If we have a worldwide recession, which decreases worldwide demand for oil AND oil producting nations/countries are able to, and also decide to, maintain the 84.5 million barrel per day production level, THEN we MIGHT see gasoline and oil prices decline.

#8 Worldwide oil production is probably fixed at 84.5 mbpd because we are at the MAXIMUM global oil extraction rate. This is known as global peak oil production or simply "peak oil".

#9 Once it becomes impossible to continue extraction at the incredibly high rate of 84.5 mbpd, oil production will fall, every year, forever. This means rapidly rising prices (much more so than now) and/or severe global economic recession, or more likely, a string of ever worsening recessions, that continue for a few generations.

#10 It is unclear how much longer the oil producers can maintain 84.5 mbpd. I hope it is for a long time, but production may begin to fall as early as this year. The rate that production falls will determine how fast prices rise, and how severe the shock is to the global economy.

In summary, gasoline prices are determined by the free market of supply and demand. They are rising because of a fixed oil supply in a market of increasing demand for oil. Supply may be at the all time maximum, and may begin to decrease, which will in turn, accelerate the increase in the price. This is bad news for the global economy because, like fresh water, oil is a "master resource", upon which all economic activity depends.

    .....

Note: The 84.5 million barrels per day figure is based on averaging out 12-months of oil production data from the USA's Department of Energy's "Energy Information Agency" (EIA). I've seen other daily production numbers tossed around online and in the press, but I think the EIA data is fairly reliable, and the trends shown there are probably the same for any other dataset. In any event, the exact numbers are not of great practical importance, instead, of interest are the rate of change of these numbers.

This is a test post. I'm setting up my artspots account to pull entries from this journal that have a specific flag, so I can make updates on there without every personal entry and every redundant art entry popping up over there. Let's see if it works!

... that didn't work. I'll ask for tech support! :D

ETA: YAY, IT WORKS! HELLO, ARTSPOTS!

    Tell Me! Kinder Surprise Eggs
Can you get them where you're at?

I've got a Google Notifier for Smart Car mentions, and the strangest thing about one of this morning's posts was that he said they can't get Kinder Surprise eggs in the US.

    Really?

    Happy Canada Day!
Good day, overall. We skipped going to the zoo, did some yardwork and saw Hancock (which exceeded expectations, and at least left a few surprises out of the trailer).

Afterwards we headed to the Milton fairgrounds for the fireworks. Enjoyable, although how they can play an all Canadian setlist during the fireworks that omits Rush, I'll never know. I shall be writing a strongly worded letter to the mayor.

We went to a live taping of How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria on Sunday. Good show, enjoyable, and brisk. The results show is short, but strangely paced.

Dinner afterwards was at Wayne Gretzky's. Good food, superb service, and the filthiest bathroom I've ever seen at a place that has a $20 entree. I mean, seriously. Atrocious. Ich.

So, in conclusion: Two Canada Day Tunes.

Yesterday I went shopping at Wal-Mart for some stuff for my trip. I picked up 2 new pairs of work pants. A new pair of shorts. A new pair of shoes. A new pair of jeans. Also I got several other small items all intended to go with me on the trip (toothpaste, things of that nature that I was running out of at home). I think I have everything i will need for the trip, now i just need to wash clothes right before I leave and pack it all. Then hope like hell I don't forget anything.

I've been doing some research on my new rifle tonight. It is a Soviet M44. I have found out that it was produced in 1948 (which makes it a solid 60 years old). It was made at a place called Izhevsk which seems most famous as being the place where the AK-47 was designed. It weighs 9lbs. It is 40" long without the bayonet extended.

The markings on it look very similar to those below.

Anyway, I've found a neat quit meter thing that tells me how long I haven't been smoking, and how much money i have saved. Hopefully it works. (code didn't work, ill try to fix it.)

OK, it works now. I'll be adding this permanently to my livejournal userinfo.
